During the San Sebastian Festival, I was lucky to attend the preview of this film, and even though I hate horror and suspense movies, it surprised me a lot, and even more when I discovered that the director / scriptwriter was Spanish.
A young man, along with his three smaller brothers, faces an empty house after the death of their mother. The children hide from their dangerous father, who turns out to be locked in the attic...
Sergio G. Sánchez surprises us with a spectacular script and some confusing plot twists, essential in movies like this.
Cinematographically the tape is great, elegant and simple. The colors are beautiful, and the costumes and casting are incredible. I must admit that the actors are key in this film. George MacKay, one of my favorite actors, takes the leading role to another level and dazzles us with a realistic and accurate performance. Accompanied by great actors like Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton or Mia Goth, he gives life to a mystery story that left us all speechless.
The film is based on a constant limit, a constant line (metaphorical and real) that separates the reality from the dream, the mind from the body. All this accompanied by a constant suspense, a constant waiting to discover what is happening, and that without a doubt, very few will be able to predict. The film is dark and complicated, but it certainly offers a mental challenge that is worth taking. This family drama manages to reach the viewer, and the tone of suspense is essential for the narrative to work.
A great movie even for those of us who do not usually see this type of cinema. Spanish cinema is worth it.
